Northside Hospital Offers Unique Learning Opportunity for Local High School Students

Northside Hospital is partnering with the Learning for Life Healthcare Exploring Program to offer local high school students a unique, inside view of the hospital and its many careers.  The program, which is affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, aims at exposing the nation’s youth (both male and female) to the many facets of health care and to careers that they may never have otherwise considered.

During the eight-month program, students (grades 10-12) will learn about the different areas of the hospital through tours, lectures and hands-on training.  Classes planned for 2012-2013 will include such topics as:

  • Robotic Surgery
  • Radiology/Imaging
  • Cardiology
  • Pharmacy
  • Physical Therapy and Rehab
  • Emergency and Critical Care
  • Maternity and Newborn Services

“Students will have the opportunity to talk to hospital staff and physicians and learn more about their various health care careers, and even gain hands-on experience within some specialties,” said Kelli Buchwald, community relations manager, Northside Hospital.  “With two years of Healthcare Exploring behind us, we hope to make this year’s program even more valuable and exciting for students.”

Classes meet once a month at various Northside Hospital locations in Alpharetta, Cumming and Atlanta.  Attendance at all classes is mandatory.  Only students in grades 10-12 will be accepted into the program.  If accepted, a fee of $100 is required, which includes registration, class materials, scrubs and graduation celebration.  Students are responsible for their own transportation.

A mandatory information/kick-off meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012, 6-7 p.m., at the Northside/Alpharetta Medical Campus, 3400 Old Milton Pkwy, Building C, Suite 310, Alpharetta, GA  30005.  Interested students must RSVP by Aug. 24 to Adrienne Vinson at avinson@atlantabsa.org or 770-956-5698 to attend the information session.  Representatives from Northside Hospital and Learning for Life will be on hand to review the program curriculum and application process, and answer questions.  Attendance at the information/kick-off is mandatory for acceptance into the program.  Parents are welcome to attend.
