Take advantage of the spring weather and see the pros in action, while helping out a very good cause.
A tennis tournament held at Polo Golf & Country Club this weekend will benefit the Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta Affiliate.
“This pro-am charity event is a win-win for everyone,” said Dan Moscar, General Manager with the Polo Golf & Country Club. “Amateur tennis players will have the opportunity to play against professionals, and a worthy cause will benefit from the proceeds earned. The Polo Golf & Country Club of Cumming, Georgia is pleased to host this event.”
The tournament kicked off Friday evening with a Tennis Pro Exhibition followed by a Men and Women Pro-Am Pairing, and poolside dinner for players and sponsors. Amateur tennis enthusiasts from all over Georgia, paying fees of $150, will play against Atlanta tennis professionals. A live auction will take place on Saturday evening following another full day of pro-am tennis and raffles for extraordinary items, all benefiting the Komen Atlanta Affiliate.
“One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime,” says Jessica Murdock, Komen Atlanta Special Events Manager. “We rely on community events and support to help us enable women to detect and survive breast cancer. From this event, 85 percent of all proceeds will find life-saving screening and treatment programs in the Atlanta area.”
Tennis pros John Hanna (a.k.a. Johnny Pro-Am), Evan Fowler, Davyd Fowler, Vanaka Gunawardhana, Matt Cozad, Mellisa Thieke, and Nannelly Tippins will be competing with the amateurs, as well as competing in a showcase to be held at the beginning of the tournament.
Master of Ceremonies for the two-day event will be local radio, television and film star, Tom Clark.
"I'm honored to be a part of something special,” says Tom Clark. “The tennis tournament will be spectacular and the items they’ve gotten for the silent auction are mind boggling. Everyone will be blown away. I love helping communities give back and can't wait to personally thank all of the sponsors. I’m looking forward to a great weekend and raising money for Komen Greater Atlanta. It's going to be fun."
The live auction is open to the general public and parking is free. The event is expected to attract collectors of sports memorabilia, tennis enthusiasts and people who enjoy the excitement of auctions and raffles. Event times are underway until 8 p.m. Saturday.
