Facebook to Test Charging Fee for Some Services — Would You Be Prepared to Pay?

The social media company is reminding everybody that this is just a test, and a limited one at that, but it is to begin charging a select few to send messages to non-friends.

Several media outlets, including the Independent, are reporting the latest shake up from Facebook — charging a fee for sending some messages. However, this is a test, this is only a test — for now anyway. And only a select few, reportedly, are part of the test case. I hope I'm not one!

According to the Independent, a $1 fee is being charged to the few selected as participants in the test for sending message to people with whom they are not friends. The Facebook messaging system reportedly usually deflects unwanted or unsolicited correspondence into a "folder" that can be ignored if the potential recipient so chooses. I guess the $1 will buy a way out of the "ignore" folder and into the recipient's inbox, where they probably can then personally choose to ignore it — or not.

According to the test rules, the users could receive one paid-for message per week, but not more than three a month. People, however, are wary that advertisers will be prepared to pay this low cost and users will begin being bombarded with spam advertising. Others are fearful it is just the beginning of Facebook finding a way to charge all those millions of users for more and more of Facebook's use.

So how do you feel about Facebook charging for this type of message? Have you had occasion to send a private message to a non-friend on Facebook in the past and would you be prepared to pay for the service in future?

Facebook needs to remain FREE or it will lose a good portion of its members, including the loss of generations to come.

This sort of reminds me when Home Depot came into the market... At first, the prices were irresistable, but after the home improvement giant crushed all of the lumber yards and "Mom & Pop" hardware stores - and had cornered the market, that's when they got GREEDY and the prices went UP-UP-UP !!!

I am strongly opposed to this. I get enough spam from friends; I would tighten my who can send me mail filters MORE if I could.

I wish Facebook would try to charge me. I'd be happy to delete my account.

Facebook already blew it with the way they mess with the security settings and other changes. Now to add charges, if I hadn't already deleted my account, I definitely would.

As long as my account is free I'll have it. Because they went public and are searching for revenue a real chance exists for a competitor to take its place. That's how these things happen. And they have the perfect model to emulate. The old "privately owned" Facebook.
