The Forsyth County Registrations and Elections Board completed its recount of the Senate District 27 and House District 26 votes Wednesday afternoon with only a slight change in the vote tally and no change in the outcome of the two-hotly contested races.

Incumbent Sen. Jack Murphy received 13,290 votes to challenger Steve Voshall's 13,176. Murphy's total was unchanged. Voshall's final tally represents a loss of one vote.

There was no change in the election night totals in the House District 26 race. Former major league pitcher Geoff Duncan defeated former State Rep. Tom Knox by a count of 4,507 to 4,452.

"Our system worked," Murphy said Wednesday afternoon. "I was confident the recount would hold. I welcomed it so it would put people's minds at ease whether they voted for me or not."

County Voter Registrations and Elections, Supervisor Barbara Luth said she received requests for a recount from the Knox and Voshall campaigns shortly after last week's election.

Duncan, a newcomer to the political arena ran a particularly strong race against Knox, a veteran legislator and savvy campaigner. Knox was first elected to the state House in 2000 but resigned to run for State Insurance Commissioner a year ago. Having lost that election, he qualified to run for the new House District earlier this year.

Voshall, who is the founder and former president of the Forsyth County Tea Party, also ran a strong race against a veteran lawmaker. Voshall was not available for comment.

More than 30 percent of Forsyth County's registered voters voted in the election.

"I was very happy with that turnout," Luth said. "Usually we have a lower turnout in the primary elections."
