Legalizing Marijuana? Here is What Cumming is Saying

As Georgia CARE seeks to change the state's laws on marijuana, eventually leading to a complete legalization of the drug, here's what some Cumming Patch readers had to say on the subject.

Since we told you about a movement to legalize marijuana in Georgia, Patch readers have had plenty to say on the topic.

Georgia Campaign for Access, Reform & Education, or Georgia CARE, a project of the Georgia Taxpayers Alliance Inc., wants to change the state's laws on marijuana, eventually leading to a complete legalization of the drug. The group is participating in the first Southern Cannabis Reform Conference this weekend in Atlanta.

Our post, Question of the Week: Should Marijuana be Legalized, received more than 87 comments as March 14. Here's what some Cumming Patch readers had to say:

It should absolutely be legalized. It is far safer than alcohol and we need to take these non-criminals OUT of the criminal justice system. I have never seen an episode of Intervention on a pothead...just sayin'! - tiffannie

Yes, what we need is to add potheads, texting and tweeting, to our roadways along with the drunks! What a brilliant idea! - Hal Schneider

If your child were the deceased victim of an impaired driver, your attitude might be a little different! - Hal Schneider

Renee, maybe you should spend a nite in Grady's ER and see all the "innocent pot smokers" and their victims roll in. I guarantee it will change your mind! I worked there for a number of years and I have seen it. - r patton

Yes, absolutely I think it should be legalized. I tried it when I was a teenager and I didn't like it but I have always believed that it should not be illegal for someone who does choose to smoke it. I have raised 5 children, and each one of them went through their wild days when they did things that they were told not to do. I can truthfully say that out of all the drugs I believe that pot is the safest, and I don't believe that it causes car accidents, if anything they drive too slow! - Wanda Thacker

I fully support the legalization and regulation of all cannibis species. It is a wonderful plant, a true gift from God who gave man all seed bearing plants. Please vote yes to legalize. It is an amazing medicine for people who are sick and is much more effective at relieving pain than synthetic man made opiates like oxycodone, which kill more Americans every year than all illegal drugs combined. Georgia's cancer patients should not be denied this healing herb any longer! - Robin Asscher

Do you agree? Should marijuana be legal in Georgia? Why or why not? Share your thoughts in the comments section below to continue the conversation.

This seems so simple to me, If the scientific community widely agrees that Marijuana has a medical purpose then why is it still Schedule 1 (Highest priority of danger) while Methamphetamines and Heroin are Schedule 2? The definition of schedule 1 states that the drug has absolutely 0 medical usefullness or application. This is totally backward and makes no sense, regulate and tax it and focus your time and efforts on cracking down on prescription drug dealers. As for those of you talking about visiting trauma units, the government allows alcohol and cigarettes... Do you receive an alarmingly high amount of Marijuana related accidents compared to Alcohol or your oncology departments diagnoses of different forms of lung cancer? Those are both legal in our country. Why then does it follow that while Alcohol is legal, Marijuana is not? What is your non fallacy filled argument for that? Just make it Schedule 2, as it CLEARLY has medical uses as proven by numerous studies on its effects on inflammation and nausea.

I completely agree with you Libertarian Joe. Not to mention, that if it is leagalized and taxed and monitored by the government, there would be less chance and cause for major dealers and cartels to lace it, which is the biggest reason for any death related to the drug. Plus, one of the biggest draws to doing drugs is the fact that it is not legal. Like most, once you are of legal age to do something, the appeal wears off because the excitement of maybe getting caught, is gone. Make an age limit just like cigarettes . I think it should be leagal and I don't even smoke it

I think that the vast majority of Americans have had enough of this prohibition nonsense. When the government forced the marijuana prohibition onto us in 1937 they promised that it'd eliminate marijuana use and make people safe. But after more than seventy years it hasn't achieved either of these goals!

In fact by shutting down the legal supply of marijuana while at the same time being totally incapable of curbing demand for the herb, the government has created a massive black market for marijuana that draws drug dealers into our neighborhoods and makes our children LESS safe.

We should NOT have laws that create more harm than what they prevent! It is unconscionable for our elected officials to perpetuate the failed prohibition on marijuana that *increases* crime and *decreases* the safety of our children!!

We need to END the marijuana black market and the easy access kids have to marijuana by letting stores sell legally-grown marijuana to adults at prices low enough to prevent illegal competition. We need to legalize marijuana like beer and wine!
