Little Known Threat in Your Home Can Harm Your Child

Did you know coin-sized button batteries found in electronic devices can get stuck in your child's throat and cause severe burns?

A critical partnership was formed recently to share life-saving information with parents and caregivers about the potential risks of swallowing coin-sized lithium batteries.

According to Safe Kids USA and Energizer, these button batteries found in many electronic devices can lodge in the throat of a child. The saliva immediately triggers an electrical current that causes a chemical reaction that can severely burn the esophagus in as little as two hours. In some cases, children have died from their injuries.

Coin-sized button batteries can be found inside the battery compartment of mini remote controls, small calculators, watches, key fobs, flameless candles, singing greeting cards and other electronics. Small children often have easy access to these devices, and many parents do not know there is a risk.
