Obama Campaign Poster: Offensive or Clever?
The poster has the Obama-Biden logo replacing the stars in the Stars and Stripes.
For sale on the Barack Obama campaign website: a print of the American flag -- with the Obama-Biden campaign logo replacing the stars.
According to store.barackobama.com, the print, called "Our Stripes: Country Print," is $35. The website description reads, "Screen print designed by Ross Bruggink and Dan Olson of Studio MPLS. Limited edition (250 units), hand-numbered, 24'' x 36'' and made in the USA."
The overall flag image is in the outline of the continental 48 states, but appears not to include Alaska or Hawaii, the president's birthplace.
The design has provoked some controversy online.
According to foxnews.com, reaction on sites like Twitter and Facebook has been very negative.
“This is so offensive,” one reader wrote. “I don’t know why I’m shocked, but I am. This stoops to new lows.”
In Atlanta, syndicated radio host Neal Boortz is not impressed.
"What a jerk," Boortz wrote on his Facebook page. "Honestly, can anyone cite any other instance where an American president has altered our flag with either his image or his campaign logo?"
How do you feel about this development? Do you feel President Obama is being disrespectful of the American flag when he alters its image for campaign purposes? Tell us in the comments below.

Do I have to point out the differences? This is not a flag. It has six stripes. The flag has 13 stripes. The US flag is not designed in the shape of the boundaries of the continental United States. The American flag has been a source of inspiration for artists good and bad since Betsy Ross first stitched it up.

I think the problem here is that Obama's huge ego has led to the replacement of the field of stars with his "O." I'm really surprised they didn't put his silhouette on the flag.

This is the typical response of the cult like worshipping by the Obama "moonies" that he can do nothing wrong despite the facts that he has done very little right. The pic shown has a total of 9 stripes, 5 red/4 white (the white ones count too) by the way, 6? Pay a little attention to the topic at hand, please? The Grateful Dead have a nice version of "Steal your Face" and the flag, but they aren't running for President. I see that with the blind following of people nowadays how Hitler and Mussolini came to power.

By now, does anyone really expect our president to pay any attention to the constitution or our United States Code? Seems advertising for his candidacy doesn't apply....oh wait, I guess he has invoked his "Executive Privileges" again...
United States Code
Title 36
Chapter 10
§176. Respect for flag
(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

I am a stickler for respectful uses of the flag myself. However, these sections of the US Code have been ignored for decades (good or bad, I don’t know). We seen the US Flag and/or Stars/Stripes used in so much that violates the code… Motorcycle helmets, flag beach towels, disposable cups. Also, look at the logos of the parties – don’t they use the Stars/Stripes in the animal designs? Heck, even our beloved American characture “Uncle Sam” is a violation of this code.
99.9999% of millions of usage of US Flag and/or Stars/Stripes themes is intended in respectful ways. I don’t see the above image as a violation, but others may.

In my opinion, this is a case of manufactured outrage. There are plenty of actual issues on which to attack Obama. As to Neal Boortz's question, ""Honestly, can anyone cite any other instance where an American president has altered our flag with either his image or his campaign logo?" -- the answer is yes. Yes, I can:
Abraham Lincoln. (http://www.zazzle.com/for_president_abram_lincoln_election_campaign_flag_poster-228463085211190756) Not only did he put writing on the stripes, he put a portrait of himself in the star field. Not his logo. His face.

I agree all campaigns are Manufactured, But not only DId Mr. Lincoln deface the flag, But I also know for certain that every US president has defaced the flag since Carter. The little flags they give away at the convension, I have seen the people give them to the President to get his signature on them. And they all signed. But that just goes to show none of them care about the Constitution. When is a America and Social media going to get together and say, "Screw the Idiots they put in front of us" and do a "write in" of someone who better suits the people. Hell Why not Clint Eastwood, or Powell or Rice for that matter, I would vote for her over any of those puppets they put in front of us. We are the Idiots in this. Grant's right -- the Constitution does not address treatment of the flag. As a matter of fact, the biggest beef I have with this whole affair is the idea that the flag is something as sacred as the Constitution and the idea that creating an image of it is somehow a sin. It's a symbol, not a holy book, and symbols are nothing if not adaptable. The colors under which this country sails are not as important as the principles upon which it was founded. We're living in an era where politicians get slammed as unpatriotic if they don't wear flag pins on their lapels, while little if any attention is paid to their records on constitutional questions like freedom of expression or rights of the accused.
What I'm saying is, a campaign's use of flag images is literally the least important thing about that campaign, save maybe who they hire to do the catering. Anyone can wave a flag as a shorthand for patriotism.

Indeed, "the flag should never be used for advertising purposes." This poster is not the American flag. "Our Stripes: Country Print" was designed by Ross Bruggink and Dan Olson at Studio MPLS, not the president. I'm curious as to how that makes the president a "jerk." Also, the poster is being sold through a website and not the president himself.
Pittsburgh Paul
11:18 am on Friday, September 21, 2012
If it's sold on the barackobama.com website, it's an official fundraising/promotional/advertising item. The website disclosure states:
PAID FOR BY OBAMA VICTORY FUND 2012 A JOINT FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE AUTHORIZED BY
OBAMA FOR AMERICA, THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE
AND THE STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTIES IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: CO, FL, IA, NV, NH, NC, OH, PA, VA, AND WI
Again, are you proving a point that our president is clueless as to what is being shared under his name? And for those that don't "see" an American flag in the poster, you are being ignorant. For those that want to argue that it must be OK because everyone else is doing it, or has done it - you indeed have elected and will sadly re-elect your "do whatever feels good" president and to hell with national ethics found in our Constitution and Federal Codes.

C'mon People. Keep to the topic. The question is: Obama Campaign Poster: Offensive or Clever? And the answer should be Yes by every one of you posting on this thread. The American Flag and the Constitution (and US Codes by extension) still matter. If a public citizen with no elected position (Romney) or a fashion designer (Ralph Lauren) or Olympian disrespect the flag, it is disgraceful and condemnable. But I can choose not to vote for Romney, I can choose not wear Polo, I can choose not watch the Olympics - I cannot choose another president (right now). When the highest elected position in this country, which is sworn by upholding the constitution, has little regard for THE American symbol as to disgrace it and ignore the US Code, then yes, every one of you should be offended. There are plenty of other posts on the Lilburn Patch to debate the merits of the candidates. But please, someone post a comment in defense of our current president disrespecting the American Symbol of Freedom…. other than everyone else does it so Obama can too.

FWIW the Constitution doesnt say anything in regard to the flag do might I ask that you cease your attempts at that association? Further The Flag Code that you're all up in a tizzy about is in no way "binding" and is and has been subject to change as customs change.
Since the drawing in question is NOT ACTUALLY A FLAG none of this is applicable and I'm certain there are more important issues to discuss than some fingerpainting ..

LOL! This has been fun. I've watched all these battles for months and just thought I'd jump in to stir the pot for a change. And yes, I said it is condemnable that the Republicans are disgracing the flag as well. And it's the symbolism of the flag at issue. And if we can't trust the president (whether Democrat, Republican, Independent) with little things like preserving the integrity of our flag, how can we trust him/her to protect any of our interests. When we stop caring about the small stuff and trusting Gov't to manage it for us, we have given up our right to influence our leaders. And no, I don't even read the Drudge Report or listen to Neal Boortz - I'm just one of those that believe that if you get called on something, just own and move on trying to make it right. Sadly, in the world of politics, admitting that you are never anything less than 100% right all the time is the norm and detrimental to our future. This is ridiculous. I can not believe anyone would really try to argue that this pic is demeaning. As I watched our beloved Grayson Rams destroy Dacula last night, I could help but notice the group of Dacula students with the flag incorrectly drawn on their chest, wrapped around the shoulders, covering their backsides as shorts, being dragged on a stick as they cheered for their team, etc. The flag is often changed and misrepresented for some other purpose. And yes....all presidential candidates and their teams have been guilty of this. I am sure their are people posting their disgrace who have used a napkin on the 4th with a misreprentation of the flag without even thinking twice. Those same people probably have purchased flag printed swimwear or shorts to wear to the beach with pride. In truth, some of the issues that have come up in this campaign do seem a little out there. This one from the Huffington Post although I have to admit, I haven't seen it get too much traction outside of the extreme blogs. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/20/mitt-romney-dyed-face-brown-fake-tan-univision_n_1900707.html
Quote from Huffington Post.
"Mitt Romney appeared on Univision Wednesday alongside Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas, but something was a little peculiar about his appearance -- his skin tone. Looking back at the hundreds of photos logging his every moment on the campaign trail, the Republican presidential nominee is usually not so shockingly tan.
While his orangey-brown appearance on Univision could have been the result of bad lighting or a makeup mishap, left-wing blog the Democratic Underground concluded that Romney "dyed his face brown for his Univision interview.""
