Residents of Georgia and more than a dozen other states have filed petitions to secede from the United States, according to media reports.
Residents of Alabama, New York, Michigan, Texas and other states have filed the petitions under the "We The People" program, featured on the White House website, according to the Huffington Post.
The Georgia petition, which already has more than 4,000 signatures, reads in part:
"...Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and institute new Government..."
The petitions come in the wake of President Obama winning a second term November 6 over Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
According to the Huffington Post, The White House website explains of the review process for "We the People" petitions that get 25,000 signatures in a 30-day period: "If a petition meets the signature threshold, it will be reviewed by the Administration and we will issue a response."

Why is he Racist? He said nothing to indicate anything racial. He made no racial comments and no slurs that were racial. Just because we don't support a person or the views of that person doesn't make us racist,it makes us individuals with an opinion. i agree Hal, my personal belief's aside - this is not an issue of Race. I know many people who I know are NOT racist and their complaints are centered around policies. Policies and the ever increasing debt of our country. Race has nothing to do with it. It is not as simple of an answer as - Oh they are just racist!

By agreeing with this petition we are not racists. I hate the fact that people have to use the race card whenever somebody doesn't agree with they're opinion. All we are doing is expressing our disagreement with the results of the recent election. WE THE PEOPLE have the right to express our opinions just as do the people that reelected the president. I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear about racism, it's not conscious racism for most people, but an underlying unease, I'm not trying to play the racist card, as you say, but it is there in some.You certainly have the right to start and sign any petition that you want, that is what this country is all about, freedom! I disagreed when Bush won 2 terms but I wasn't angry enough about it to leave the country. I just worked harder for what I thought was right...secession is a sure way to destroy Rome.

I agree with Marion. If you read a history book, you will see the result of this action in 1865. As it goes when people start this type of action, there is no plan as to what they would do instead. I think this falls under the heading of "poor losers":Grow up!.

It is interesting that we Americans applauded the secession of all of the republics of the former Soviet Union, as well as other countries that have formed since the end of the cold war, but somehow, this is something to be jeered at here in the U.S.
Our country was formed with just such an option contemplated by our founding fathers. This is not the result only of the latest election, but the path that the country has been on for the past 60 to 70 years. Many believe that the accelerated speed at which the country has moved toward socialism over the past four years had to be stopped with this election if there was any hope to save us from disaster. Now that it is clear that certain areas of the country wish to follow this change to socialism, many believe that it is time for those of us who believe in the original form of government that is defined in the Constitution to allow those who want a socialist government to have it. We simply wish for them to allow us to have the form of government we wish to have as well. The only way to accomplish that is through secession.

I signed the Ga petition. Not because I want to completely secede but because I want people to understand this country has gotten way to big. We need to divide the country like the weather map and vote for regional Presidents. We can still have one President but when the whole President thing was created there were only 10 or so states. Now there are 50 and billions of people. I think having Regional (district) Presidents is the way to go.

The folks here worried about socialism really don't have a clue as to what it really is. If you think that this country is headed for socialist status, I'm at a loss. Is unemployment insurance bad? Is social security and medicare bad? Is the draft in time of war bad? are interstate highways and paved roads bad? Are National Parks bad? These are all SOCIALIST type things but they don't make this country socialist. Or Marxist, or comunist, they are just for the good of everyone and the use of everyone. Socialism is used as loosely by the losers of this last election as they claim the race card is played by liberals. Let's just fix the country's problems by working together to do it and quit sniping at each other, valuable energy is being wasted here that could be put to good use for America.

Unemployment compensation would not be socialist IF it was only the 26 weeks that companies actually pay for. Anything beyond that is a FREE handout, and definitely IS socialism. I notice that you do not mention programs like food stamps and SSI which have grown by MILLIONS in the past four years. Both of these programs are socialistic when they are provided to millions of able body individuals. You also did not mention $90 billion dollars given to "green" energy companies that went belly up! More socialism. Nor did you mention the government taking ownership of automobile companies and then firing their executives....PURE socialism. Or the bailout of banks and insurance companies. Or forgiveness of student loans, mortgages, credit card debt, car loans, etc. Socialism! And all the while either borrowing the money to do all this from China, or simply printing the money out of thin air! Bill not really considering that if Spain actually changes its constitution to allow the seperation of that region, once they get their independance they will immediatly apply for membership of the European Union an even bigger mess than the US (not just talking financially) this also goes for Scotland seeking independance from the UK.
