“Hail the New, Ye Lads and Lasses”

During the Christmas holidays, zillions of emotional stimulants swirl around us like flying kaleidoscopes. We stare into decorated trees and colorful light displays looking for peace and hope. We cherish eggnog and mistletoe hugs. Extended Families collide. We devour abundant food buffets, listen to beautiful carols and holiday melodies, and schedule events that stimulate our spiritual needs. Soon after the ball drops on Time Square, our emotions crash land. With a new year's reality, we formulate flight plans of resolutions, business plans and dietetic promises. Happy New Year!

Our annual emotional flight path includes Christmas, Thanksgiving, religious holidays, Winter Solstice, Mayan Apocalypse, New Year's Eve, assorted birthdays, the Super Bowl, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Ground Hog Day, The First Day of Spring, and every Friday with a weekend after it! We find ways to mark time, and celebrate our successes, welcome new beginnings and plan the next celebration. These positive, emotional affirmations are time tied to dates, supplying energy and motivation for our productive and rewarding lives—to make the rest of our lives the best of our lives.

In our culture we are conditioned to like new stuff and fresh starts, but are we prepared to "cease the day?" Have you chosen a specific set of emotionally satisfying reasons to gracefully live to be 120, and the means to sustain yourself? Is there something you really want to do before your daughter's next birthday, or your next vacation, or before you reach 100—100 years old, that is: not mph! Do you want to do it every day, a few times a year, or play in the next five National Senior Games? (Next Senior Olympics are July 2013 in Cleveland, Ohio, by the way!). What’s your plan—got gas in your car? It's time! Ready, set, go!

If you are a baby boomer or a more seasoned senior, you probably already have the kahoonas and experience, but are you fit for the task? Do you need to retool yourself? Your opportunities are unending! The U.S. is positioned to reap the benefits of senior mentors, leaders and craftsman hanging around longer than thought possible. Boomers are already changing the face of aging with productive and active lifestyles, determined to live life to the fullest, to stay more healthy, fit and vital than ever before. The world will be looking at you, Mr. and Mrs. Senior, to lead by positive example—now's your chance! What’s in your Flight Plan to make the “rest of your life the best of your life?

As a representative of Eastminster Presbyterian OASIS (Older Adults Still In Service), I would emphasize scheduling events that not only stimulate awareness of spiritual needs, but provide a sense of fulfillment. In order to balance what may be a busy senior schedule, make time to gain a sense of wholeness getting in touch with that which is eternal. If you are not so busy and would like to have some fellowship, consider joining our group of seniors either as part of the larger congregation in weekend worship or just seniors in week-day outings. As you start planning 2013, be sure to set aside time to address your deepest needs. Thanks Bill and Sheri, for your encouragement to the boomer generation to be active and healthy and for reminding us that includes a spiritual component.
