That is the premise of A. Shane Etter's first novel, Bottom Dwellers.

"I was the least creative person there was until I had a stroke at 50-years-old, and my brain changed and I became creative literally overnight," said Etter.

Patrick Dylan is scuba diving in Lake Lanier when he encounters green mutant creatures on the bottom of the lake. He also meets beautiful Park Ranger Trudy Price and romance follows. After battling the mutants, Patrick and Trudy become engaged, get married and go to New York City for their honeymoon, where they meet a different kind of Bottom Dweller, the mole people of New York, habitués of the abandoned subway and train tunnels underneath Manhattan.

"A battle with the mole people sets the scene for my future books in the Dwellers series with Patrick and Trudy battling various mutant people around the globe," added Etter.
