Winter Storm Leon: How Much Will It Snow in Cumming, Forsyth County?

Update, Tuesday Afternoon

Cumming and Forsyth County are under a winter storm warning through Wednesday at 7 a.m. The previous winter storm advisory is no longer in effect.

The advisory warns of light to moderate snow that will through the evening and accumulate to 1 to 3 inches.

"Snow and ice covered roadways will make travel treacherous," the warning says. "Numerous vehicle accidents have already been reported across northern Georgia this afternoon." 

Visibilities could be reduced to half a mile within heavier snow bands. Temps will dip to the teens and 20s.

The temp in Cumming tonight will dip to 17, according to the NWS forecast.

Update, Tuesday Morning

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for a portion of north Georgia, including Cumming and Forsyth County, in effect from 9 a.m. Tuesday through 7 a.m. Wednesday. Light snow is expected to begin Tuesday morning and continue through late evening.

The advisory warns of light snow accumulations up to 1 inch; snow and ice covered roads beginning later Tuesday morning and continuing through Wednesday morning and reduced visibilities. Travel will be difficult. 

Cumming has an 80 percent chance of snow Tuesday and a 60 percent chance Tuesday night, according to the NWS' latest forecast. Accumulation of less than a half an inch is possible.

Winter Storm Leon will bring a long swath of snow, ice and a wintry mix to the Deep South due to a bitterly cold arctic air mass that has plunged southward behind a sharp cold front as moisture streams northward from the Gulf Coast, according to The Weather Channel.

Original Report, Monday Night

Cumming and Forsyth County are set for snow, sleet and frigid cold.

The National Weather's hazardous weather outlook warns of light snow accumulations Tuesday afternoon and evening, especially in northeast Georgia. 

"The combination of enhanced winds and dropping temperatures in this arctic airmass will likely allow for wind chill values falling below zero across far north Georgia Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning," it says. "A wind chill advisory will likely be issued...." 

The Weather Channel predicts flurries or snow showers will give way to a steady snowfall in Cumming during the afternoon hours, with accumulations of less than 1 inch. 

The NWS gives Cumming a 70 percent chance of snow or sleet Tuesday and 60 percent chance of snow Tuesday night. Cumming and Forsyth could see snow by 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to The Weather Channel.

Tuesday A slight chance of snow and sleet before 1 p.m., then snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 28. North wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday Night Snow likely, mainly before 1 a.m. Cloudy, with a low around 18. Northwest wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
