Decorating: Combining the Old With the New

When it comes to using antiques and secondhand finds in your home, the adage states that “when decorating with style, the only rule is that there are no rules.”  Truthfully, such sentiment is refreshing in a day-and-age when most of our lives are governed by regulations—in essence, when it comes to your home, you’re free.

Still, the question remains: How do I seamlessly blend the old with the new?  For starters, contrasting modern furniture with vintage finds tends to add a sense of depth and richness to your space.  Don’t be afraid to utilize rustic finds amongst newer furniture and clean lines.  Part of the reason that some people balk at modern designs is because they carry with them a feeling of coolness.  By combining contemporary furniture and accessories with older architectural elements such as antique heart-pine floors and classic gilded mirrors, you can bring a feeling of warmth into the room.

With that, it’s possible to transcend time periods by mixing different styles of antiques with vintage furniture.  Truly put together rooms should look as if the pieces have been collected over time instead of feeling as if they’ve just come off the showroom floor.

Still, if you’re unsure of where to begin, using white as your base color is always a wise choice.  If you start your room with neutrals, it’s much easier to infuse versatile items and hues into your décor.

From there, be spontaneous and don’t forget to have some fun!  If your home is where you can truly be yourself, then make it something you look forward to living in—every day.
