FURNITURE CONSIGNMENT: HOW CAN IT HELP ME?

When people hear about furniture consignment stores, it’s sometimes assumed that they are simply another run-of-the-mill thrift shop; however, there are some marked differences which make consignment a great way to not only score some amazing finds, but to make a little extra money as well.

WHAT IS FURNITURE CONSIGNMENT?

Furniture consignment involves using a store to help you sell items which you no longer want or need.  Generally speaking, while you may grow tired of something or redecorate in such a way that certain pieces no longer fit with your décor, their value may still remain quite high.  Therefore, while it’s obviously possible to sell such furniture on your own, consignment has some wonderful benefits over finding your own buyer.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

In short, when you choose to place a piece of furniture with a consignment shop, it’s placed for sale in their store with the understanding that a portion of the proceeds will go to you, while the rest will go to the store itself.  Some places, however, will simply pay you a flat fee for what your furniture appears to be worth, although they will then retain the right to market your piece for the price of their choosing.

While different, both methods have merit, so regardless of which alternative you choose, the best way to take advantage of the process is to research your options and determine what store will best meet your needs.  Once you develop trust with a particular location and understand how they work and what types of customers they attract, you’ll have a better understanding of how long it might take for your piece to sell.

BENEFITS OF CONSIGNMENT FURNITURE

While it’s obviously possible for you to sell your furniture on your own, there are many clear benefits to choosing consignment as your first choice.

For starters, a good consignment shop will not only attract a larger customer base than what you could find on your own, but they also tend to have established reputations with dedicated patrons.  Additionally, they save you the trouble of advertising your product, finding a buyer, and then having to negotiate a worthy price.

Plus, it’s worth noting that consignment gives you the opportunity to browse for new, unique finds while making money on your old items.    Not only do you get the benefit of selling things you no longer need, but you are more likely to discover other timeless treasures at wonderful prices.
