Anti-Common Core Candidate Enters BOE Race

Mark Weiss' Campaign To Focus on Ensuring Local Control of Schools

CUMMING, Ga. -- Mark Weiss understands the danger in allowing the federal government to set the standards for Forsyth County schools. That is why he has announced his candidacy for the District 1 Post on the Forsyth County Board of Education.

"Someone on the Board of Education must have the courage to stand up and fight this oppressive takeover of our schools," he said. "The Dist. 1 incumbent is pro-Common Core. She advocates we surrender control to the federal government. The only other challenger is too timid to oppose it. She's conducting a poll. I don't need a poll. I oppose it. I'll go on record now as the 'No Common Core Candidate' in this race and I will fight its implementation at every opportunity."

Weiss attended Florida State University and worked for 13 years in State Government, 10 of those years were with the Florida Attorney General's Office. He served three years as an auditor and accountant then worked 10 years in the IT Department. He has worked the last six years as Senior System Engineer for Swett and Crawford in Suwanee.

He and his wife Benita, have two sons. Their youngest, Jacob, is a 4th-grader at Matt Elementary.

"I've seen the problems firsthand and I'm a concerned parent," Weiss said. "I want to focus our school curriculum on teaching children not training them to take the CRCT. I would give our teachers the freedom to teach in the classroom."

As a former auditor and accountant, Weiss says he also has grave concerns about budgeting.

"I see that our debt spinning out of control," he said. "I am not a supporter of Bonds to fund our school system. Bonds are a quick fix that creates long term financial problems."

Weiss understands he will be the underdog in the race due to a lack of funding. "Our opponents will have a lot more money to spend than I do," he said. "What they won't have is the courage to fight Common Core until it's defeated. I have the courage and the will and I'm asking those who agree with me to contact me at 678-602-0513 or weisser59@gmail.com and volunteer to join me in this fight."
