Gopaul's Ties to Cynthia McKinney Raise Concens Among Republicans

CUMMING, Ga. -- After meeting in executive session for more than an hour Monday, members of the Forsyth Republican County Committee voted to delay any further action on a complaint filed against Solicitor-General Donna S. Gopaul until after qualifying.

The complaint was filed by Gopaul's Republican opponent in the May 20th election, Susan Zereini. It centered on Gopaul's ties to radical, left-wing former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and the Democrat Party. Gopaul was McKinney's legislative aide. She donated money to McKinney's campaign and has always voted Democrat, even as recently as the 2012 presidential primary. Gopaul joined the Forsyth County Republican Party last July, just one month before announcing her campaign in a county where she would have faced certain defeat as a Democrat.

County Committee Chaiman Brad Wilkins read Zereini's complaint which states, "(Gopaul) needs to explain her switch from supporting such a radical left-wing agenda to becoming a Republican. If the explanation isn't plausible then I would ask the Republican Party to support my campaign."

Zereini attended Tuesday's meeting. Gopaul was invited, but did not attend.

The issue of Gopaul's Democrat ties came to light just before Christmas, leading most of Forsyth County's state delegation members to withdraw their support and order her to remove their names from her website and campaign literature.

It sounds to me like it's time for the Republican Party give Susan Zereini it full support and they need to do it now! As for Ms. Gopaul, if she can't find the time to answer the Republican Party's questions then she needs to step out of the race all together or run as a Democrat.

A person who switches parties should not be forced to explain why, unless there is evidence of law-breaking or some other LEGAL elections violation. Having said that...a person who worked for Cynthia McKinney for, say, more than 5 minutes, should be treated for severe mental illness. Anyone with ties to that babbling America-hating moonbat is too dangerous to hold public office in the first place, and not only should she be prevented from doing so, a lobotomy would probably be in order as well.

Sounds like Sour Grapes to me. If the complaint was substantiated, they would have already moved to action.

Shouldn't a candidate be judged on their platform, and address the issues they support, rather than having to defend themselves for running as a Republican in a county where no Democrat dares to run? What is the Republican Committee afraid of, that perhaps voters will actually agree with Ms. Gopaul's platform and secure a victory? Over whom, another Republican? What's the harm? You don't actually think that there will be a Democratic candidate to topple ANYONE running on a Republican ticket!!

To answer your question Marley, I do not think a Democrat candidate will topple anyone running as a Republican in Forsyth County any time soon. I do think, however, Ms. Gopaul demonstrated a lack of integrity by hiding her Democrat past. Many Republicans who believed her to be a Republican donated to her campaign. Lawmakers who believed her to be a Republican risked their political futures to support her. Some of them will suffer the consequences of that decision on election day. Gopaul is inherently dishonest and her decision to say anything and do anything to be elected will be her undoing.

I don't see it as a lack of integrity. Did she take deceptive and deliberate measures to hide her history? Was she shredding documents, or redacting documents to hide her history? Obviously, it was pretty simple to uncover her history if someone felt so inclined to do the research. Apparently her message was so affirming that no one even did the research. I regard it as a demonstration of her determination to offer the people what they really want and how to successfully accomplish that goal. There must have been something positive in her platform that fellow Republicans found plausible, otherwise how could she have been so successful in securing her backing. Unfortunately, the Republicans that find her history alarming, yet her platform so appealing, cannot look beyond their hatred for Democrats or anyone who at any time in history gave them their ear. I cannot tolerate such single-minded behavior on the part of politicians.
