Gopaul's Ties to Cynthia McKinney Raise Concens Among Republicans

CUMMING, Ga. -- After meeting in executive session for more than an hour Monday, members of the Forsyth Republican County Committee voted to delay any further action on a complaint filed against Solicitor-General Donna S. Gopaul until after qualifying.

The complaint was filed by Gopaul's Republican opponent in the May 20th election, Susan Zereini. It centered on Gopaul's ties to radical, left-wing former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and the Democrat Party. Gopaul was McKinney's legislative aide. She donated money to McKinney's campaign and has always voted Democrat, even as recently as the 2012 presidential primary. Gopaul joined the Forsyth County Republican Party last July, just one month before announcing her campaign in a county where she would have faced certain defeat as a Democrat.

County Committee Chaiman Brad Wilkins read Zereini's complaint which states, "(Gopaul) needs to explain her switch from supporting such a radical left-wing agenda to becoming a Republican. If the explanation isn't plausible then I would ask the Republican Party to support my campaign."

Zereini attended Tuesday's meeting. Gopaul was invited, but did not attend.

The issue of Gopaul's Democrat ties came to light just before Christmas, leading most of Forsyth County's state delegation members to withdraw their support and order her to remove their names from her website and campaign literature.

Donna Gopaul was not assigned an intrenship with Cynthia McKinney by her college she was working as a paid Legislative Aide. She held this position after graduating college while waiting to go to Law School. Donna Gopaul also made a donation to Ms KcKinney campaign around the same time that she worked for her. Susan Zereini's was no longer needed by the Pickens County's DA Office so she was given a six weeks severance package and she moved career.

JJ aka Josh Jones Donna Gopauls campaign manager?

Unfortunately Josh would not stoop to the low levels that Bill Johnson has. Bill is a great campaign manager, but even he recognizes that he has a deeply flawed candidate, hence the smoke and mirrors. I actually support his other two candidates, but not Susan Zereini.

Ann - this NYC style of smear campaigning was brought on by Susan Zereini. You can pretty it up all you want but Susan knows that no one in Cherokee or in Pickens will endorse her. No longer needed?? An ADA is no longer needed? And you expect fair minded voters to believe that? Did they not replace her in Pickens County? Susan moved to Georgia in 2009 and this will be Susan's 4th job attempt in this State in 4 years.....not a good track record. Why do you suppose Susan Zereini was NOT picked by Gov. Deal? Both candidates were properly vetted, but I am willing to bet that everyone in the Forsyth County Courthouse endorsed Donna and they couldn't find anyone in Cherokee or Pickens to say anything nice about Susan Zereini.

JJ - I have to admit that I was a little unsettled when I read the Paid Display Ad in last Sunday's Forsyth County News. I do wish that Donna Gopaul could have painted a little less "ultra-Conservative" picture of herself and perhaps demonstrate a more moderate (centrist?) approach to her campaign. There are, after all, more than just Republicans voting this week. As a Democrat living in Forsyth County, I had intended to vote for Ms Gopaul until I read that Ad. Now I'm undecided. Having fought for women's rights in the 1960s, and that has no bearing on my personal moral stance on the subject, I remain Pro-Choice. I support the Affordable Care Act (commonly referred to as Obamacare until it proves so successful that the moniker will dissipate). I am appalled by Gov. Deal's most recent legislature supporting "Guns Everywhere". I think guns are great if you live on a farm, have critters that need to be put down in order to save the chickens from being attacked, but really....Guns Everywhere!!!??? And while I sense there might be a rash of comments regarding my position, I have made my case and will step out of the thread on this subject.
