Gopaul Fails to Overcome Ties to Cynthia McKinney, Obama and Democrats

CUMMING, Ga. -- In the last reporting period of 2013, incumbent Solicitor-General Donna Gopaul boasted of a wide fundraising lead over her only challenger at the time, Republican Susan Zereini. Then came the disclosure that she had worked for and donated money to left-wing, radical Democrat Cynthia McKinney and voted for Barack Obama in the last two presidential elections.

That's when the tide began to turn in the most Republican county in the state.

Monday, the Zereini for Solicitor campaign reported defeating Gopaul in the second-quarter fundraising effort by a 2 to 1 margin. Zereini reported 24 contributions and a total of $10,779 to Gopaul's 14 donations and $4,060. Bill Finch finished in second place with $6,475.

"We're excited about the momentum building in our campaign," Zereini said. Thanks to the citizens of this great county, our message of Real Republican, Real Experience has begun to resonate. But we have to keep looking forward and keep knocking on doors. The finish line is definitely in sight, but we have to keep moving."

Zereini's campaign began to gain momentum as soon as Gopaul's ties to McKinney and her voting record became public. Then came the revelation that she  failed to pay her state income taxes for two years, forcing the state to place a lien on her property. Next, the myth that she had saved taxpayers $200,000 was exposed.

In the last reporting period of 2013, Gopaul chided Zereini for raising funds from outside Forsyth County but that, too, changed dramatically in the first quarter of 2014.
Gopaul's only in-county contribution this time came from Forsyth County deputy Jamie Davis of $350. Her largest donation of $850, which accounted for 20 percent of the funds raised,  came from her mother Listra Gopaul.
