Bowling Fundraiser in Cumming for Mentor Me

The annual 'Bowl for Kids' fundraiser to benefit Mentor me of North Georgia is this weekend.

Mentor Me North Georgia, the non-profit organization that provides one-on-one mentoring relationships between volunteer adults and children, hold its annual 'Bowl for Kids' event this weekend.

“Supporters from the community will have a chance to see some of our Mentors and Mentees having fun - that’s all mentoring is. It’s so easy," said Sylvia Cardona, executive director of Mentor Me.

"Every $1,000 we raise helps us match another child with a caring mentor. We invite our neighbors from throughout Forsyth County to join us for this year's Bowl for Kids, not only to have fun, but to support Forsyth kids that need mentors and friends. And we welcome corporate sponsors."

Logan Thomas, recognized by Mentor Me as the '2012 Male Mentor of the Year' said that he wanted to contribute to local organizations and the community, so it was a matter of deciding how to get involved.

"My mentee and I actually met at a bowl-for-kids fund raising event," he said.  "We discovered that we had similar interests. After learning that he did not have an adult male in his home, it occurred to me that being a mentor to him would be a way to get personally involved and make a contribution. On the other side of the coin, I didn't anticipate the impact our relationship has had on my own life.  I feel that I have received more than I've given."

Christine Roberts, the '2012 female Mentor of the Year' said she has been blessed to be a mentor and giving back means a lot to her.

"It is personally rewarding, but it is important because you can make a difference in the life of a child, one of the most lasting things we can do," she said.

Mentor Me matches volunteer adults with children ages 6-17 who need and want a mentor. Men are matched with boys, and women are matched with girls. They share everyday activities such as sports, cooking, movies, or going to the zoo, museum, and music events, but most important, they become friends.

'Bowl for Kids' will be held at the Stars and Strikes Family Entertainment Center in Cumming at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23.

Mentor Me is a Forsyth County United Way agency. However, the organization depends on private donations for 50 percent of its funding.
