Cumming Comments On Osama Bin Laden's Death

Cumming Patch took to the streets and heard from several local government officials and citizens on the death of the al-Qaida leader.

President Barack Obama told the world late Sunday night that Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. Navy Seals in a firefight in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

Cumming Patch shares comments from our community on the death of the al-Qaida leader, the mastermind behind the horrific attacks against the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001 that killed nearly 3,000 people.

"I'm glad that he is no longer to be dealt with and hopefully this will settle some of the issues of 9/11 and bring some closure to that. I'm glad the military did their job."

- H. Ford Gravitt, Mayor of Cumming

"My initial reaction upon learning of bin Laden's death is mixed and rather complexed. Are the 343 firemen killed on September 11 now made whole by this terrorist's death? Of course not. The 343 families left behind are still without their loved ones, killed on that fateful day some 10 years ago.

There will be others, many others who will pick up where bin Laden left off. Terrorists are a cancer and that one dose of chemotherapy yesterday will not make us cancer free. The fight has just begun and America has never shied away from facing meanness and a threat to our freedom head on.

But for now let us embrace the moment knowing that one school yard bully has been dropped in his tracks, never again to be a threat to our chosen way of life."

- Danny Bowman, Forsyth County Fire Chief

"I am thankful that the families of 9/11, everybody at the twin towers, the plane crash, the Pentagon, everyone that lost their lives, the family of those people finally get some closure. It was a long hunt, a long time, but like I say, finally it's over with. As far as myself, being a veteran, I'm just glad that they finally got him.

- Donald Hughes, Commander of VFW Post 9143, Cumming

"My reaction was feeling good to get him and kill him because he was a big problem for the entire world. I am very happy he was killed, if he really was killed."

- Mohammed Kahn, Cumming Businessman from Karachi, Pakistan

"Celebrating justice today. Never excited about death of the delusional."

- Trent Cornwell, Cumming Patch Reader

"A picture is worth a thousand words, but a corpse will raise a thousand martyrs. Bin Laden's death is both a cause for celebration and concern."

- Tabitha Davidson, Cumming Patch Reader

"I am extremely proud of our Intelligence community, the military, everyone who has been fighting this war and as they continue. But to finally get to this point I think that it allows people in our community and elsewhere across the country, to have, I hate to use the word closure, I don't know if we will ever have closure, but it certainly gives us a feeling of justice. I am as happy as everyone else is."

- Ted Paxton, Forsyth County Sheriff
