Cumming Post Office, United Way Stamp Out Hunger

Its the nation's largest single-day food drive and has netted more than 1 billion pounds of food since 1993.

Forsyth County letter carriers are again asking citizens to donate food to help the hungry during this weekend's food drive.

For the past several years the has partnered with to help "Stamp Out Hunger," on the national level this is the 20th year.

On Saturday, May 12 residents are encouraged to fill a bag with non-breakable, non-perishable food items and leave next to their mailbox for the letter carrier to pick up when they deliver mail. Food can also be dropped off at the Cumming Post Office on Tribble Gap Road.

Food collected during Saturday’s drive will be delivered to local community food banks and food pantries for distribution. 

Its the nation’s largest single-day food drive and has netted more than 1 billion pounds of food since 1993. Last year, more than 73 million pounds of food were collected nationally, with more than 300,000 pounds collected in metro Atlanta.

While all non-perishable donations are welcome, foods that are high in protein such as canned tuna, salmon, beans and peanut butter are most needed. Canned fruits and vegetables, whole grain, low sugar cereals, macaroni and cheese dinners and 100% fruit juice also top the list of most needed items.

So buy a few extra items while you are doing your grocery shopping for the weekend.
