Find Your Spring Break Fun In Cumming and Nearby Towns

Whether it's an all-day camp at a nature center, hiking on the greenway or mountain trail or just flying a kite, staying in town doesn't have to be boring.

Not everyone hit the road for the beach, Disney World or some other Spring Break destination. For those of us left behind, there are still things to do and places to take our children this week.

Check out these spots around Cumming and nearby towns:

  • Climb a Mountain: Sawnee Mountain Preserve & Visitors Center offers opportunities for hiking and picnics. The Indian Seats are a natural rock formation at the top of the trail system that gives visitors a scenic view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Bring the kids by the visitor’s center, which is an award-winning learning center. (But don't tell the kids they are learning, it'll spoil their fun!)
  • Greenway: Hike the in Cumming, access it from Union Hill Road to Bethelview Road. Keep in mind the section from McFarland Parkway to Union Hill Road is temporarily closed for repairs.

  • The Forsyth County Public Library: offers daily programs for kids, families, adults and teens. From book discussions, a special bilingual story time in English and Spanish, family cinema to safety talks with officials from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and Fire Department.
  • Save The Horses: Load up the kids in the car and take the short drive to Newt Green Road in Cumming to the Save The Horses farm. The farm is committed to the rescue and rehabilitation of horses suffering from abuse, as well as the successful retirement of working horses. The farm is home to more than 60 horses. Call 770-886-5419 for more information.
  • Camp Kingfisher: Chattahoochee Nature Center has a full week of events for families and children, but the daily camp for children from kindergarten through seventh grade is the most comprehensive. It's too late to register for today, but check if spots are open Tuesday-Thursday. Extended care is available from 8:30 a.m. - 9 a.m. and again from 4 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. Call 770-992-2055 ext. 222 to see if spots are available and to register, or download a form. $170 member, $190 non-member for three days.
  • Go Fly a Kite: April is National Kite Month. A strong breeze Monday afternoon should make it great kite flying weather, but watch out for those gusts of wind (and trees and power lines). Fowler and Central Parks have good spots to try your hand at this time-honored tradition.
  • Craft Week:  Children ages 4-12 can have fun with a different craft each day this week at Chattahoochee Nature Center. Reuse and recycle items to make fun, take-home projects. Daily 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Bio-Buggies: Visit the Chattahoochee Nature Center to learn about birds and/or bugs that may be seen this spring. A docent will share activities and games for children ages 4-12 in which to take part or explore on their own.
