Horses, Dogs and Cars

What do the three have in common? Two fundraisers to benefit Save the Horses farm in Forsyth County.

The second annual 'Cars for Canines and the debut of the 'Georgia Horse Derby Celebration' are both happening Sunday, May 6 to benefit Save the Horses farm in northwest Forsyth County.

For those of you interested in cars and dogs, the 'Cars for Canines' is from noon until 4 p.m. in the parking lot at  store in Cumming.

The fun and festivities include the car show featuring more than 30 "high-end" cars, including several Mercedes and Corvetts, two Maseratis, a Lamborghini, two Jaguars, vintage T-Birds and others, according to Mary Jo Mitchell.

She and her husband, James, are part of the Mercedes Club and organizers of the car show.

"Most of them are classic cars," said Mitchell.

In addition to the fancy cars, there will be a silent auction, great food, dog and puppy adoptions by the Canine Adoption Network (CAN) and the .

All proceeds for this event will benefit the Canine Adoption Network, a local not for profit, all volunteer, dog rescue group. This dedicated organization is in need of funding to further their cause of rescuing abused, neglected dogs and finding good homes for them. The CAN group is also affiliated with Save the Horses farm.

It’s also the inaugural year of the Georgia Horse Derby Celebration featuring a day of polo at beautiful . Gates open at 12:30 p.m. and the polo match begins at 2 p.m. The cost is $20 per car and you're encouraged to bring your blankets and picnic baskets filled with goodies.

"Bring your children, there's a petting zoo," said Cheryl Flanagan, owner and operator, of Save the Horses farm.

This being the first polo fundraiser, Flanagan hopes to make it an annual event.

"We'd like to have more of them over there [Chukkar Farm], it's a really nice place to have it," she said.

Proceeds from the event will go towards helping the horses on the Save the Horses farm live happier and healthier lives while enriching the lives of the people who come to the farm and experience the many animals.
