Get Out: Back To School, Block Party for the President

A block party for President Obama, a summer parade, musical concerts and back to school events to check out.

Cumming:

Where/When: 2490 Ivey Oaks Rd, Cumming, Saturday, Aug. 6, 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Why Go?: This is a large multi-family sale where furniture, clothing, and more will be available for sale. Perfect to prepare for going back to school items especially for any new college students preparing for their first dorm room.

Why Go?: It's hard to believe the summer break is nearly over and it's time to go back to school. Start off on the right foot with a fun story to get your little ones excited for preschool, kindergarten and beyond. Great for kids 8 and under.

Presidential Block Party

Where/When: Cumming Fairgrounds, parking lot #1 at the corner of Maple Street and Castleberry Road, across from Goodson's Drugs, Saturday, Aug. 6, 4 p.m. - dusk.

Why Go?: The Forsyth County Democratic Party throws a 'Presidential Block Party' to celebrate President Barack Obama's 50th birthday party. Everyone is invited and festive attire is welcomed. For more information call 770-889-2859.

Alpharetta:

Where/When: , 11925 Wills Road, Saturday, Aug. 6, 6 a.m.

Why Go?: Alpharetta Recreation and Parks Department presents the 33rd Annual Old Solders Day Race. Sign up for the 5K or 10K race. On-site registration begins at 6 a.m. on race day. Event t-shirts are not guaranteed to race day registrants

Price: Race day fee is $20 per person. 

Where/When: , 2 S Main St, Alpharetta, Saturday, Aug. 6, 10 a.m.

Why Go?: This tradition will begin at city hall and will feature marching bands, military units, floats, clowns and classic cars. Free Varsity hot dogs, sodas and fun activities at the parade end at American Legion Post 201 on Wills Road.

Roswell:

Where/When: , 9135 Willeo Rd, Roswell, (Ben Brady Lakeside Pavilion), Saturday, Aug. 6, 11 a.m. - noon

Why Go?: Julie Austin’s upbeat music with guitar, ukulele, jawharp and storytelling is guaranteed to have your hands clapping, feet tapping and fingers snapping! Come and enjoy Julie’s interactive concert with songs, sign language and musical storytelling. Julie is a dynamic, energetic presenter and performer with over 20 years experience giving concerts for children and families. Using storytelling, songs and movement, Julie encourages children’s active participation. She has released six award winning children’s recordings. Her most recent CD, “Fandagumbo,” won a Parent’s Choice Award. Julie is a Wolf Trap Master artist and has been a teacher trainer, consultant and preschool teacher with the High/Scope Foundation. Based in Georgia, she travels nationally and internationally. Her enthusiasm, musical expertise and love of creating community through music make her a favorite of audiences everywhere.

Price: $8 general admission, $5 for children, $6 for seniors, CNC members and children 2 and under Free

Where/When: 575 Riverside Rd, Roswell, (Riverside Park), Saturday, Aug. 6, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Why Go: An outdoor summer concert series at Riverside Park on the first Saturday of the month presented by the Recreation, Parks, Historic & Cultural Affairs Department of the City of Roswell. Food is available for purchase at the concession stand or you may bring your own.  Blankets and chairs are welcome and seating is on a first come, first served basis. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be cancelled.
