Have You Met...The 'Bunnie' in the Garden at First Christian Church?

Bunnie Wharton at First Christian Church is making sure families in need are getting their vegetables.

Master gardener, Bunnie Wharton is growing more than just her faith at the First Christian Church. She and her extended team of six master gardeners are growing vegetables to harvest for families in need throughout the community.

The Care and Share Garden, established in 2008, supplies families with the fresh vegetables they need to round out a healthy diet. With the price of groceries expected to rise three to four percent this year, Bunnie's labor of love is going a long way toward accommodating the household budget for families who have suffered the loss of a job or qualify for needing help simply to keep food on the table.

Bunnie and her team tend and harvest green beans, several different types of tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, watermelons, egg plants and a variety of peppers.Β

Harvesting takes place up to the first frost. What started out as a bounty for about a dozen families has expanded substantially to help more qualified families in need to realize the importance of incorporating vegetables into their daily diet.

"We make sure needy families are getting what they want and need through the Care and Share program and it's been so much fun to see the program become a success," says Bunnie who works in the garden regularly to maintain the beds and keep the vegetables coming. Families receiving food and vegetables from the church are able to specify their preferences, which saves food from going to waste.
