Jerry Jackson Bridge Work Underway

Motorists using the westbound bridge will notice that one of two lanes is closed as crews inspect the bridge from above and below.

Crews with the Georgia DOT have begun a “head to toe” inspection of the Highway 53 (Dawsonville Highway) westbound bridge, which is located over the Chattahoochee River portion of Lake Lanier. The bridge, also known as the Jerry Jackson Bridge, is located at Gainesville Marina.

Motorists using the westbound bridge will notice that one of two lanes is closed as crews inspect the bridge from above and below. THE GDOT says engineers are working with a snooper that has a basket and can carry a person under the bridge while the equipment sits on top of the bridge.

“The snooper looks like a big arm is reaching around then under the bridge," said Billy Cantrell, District Maintenance Engineer. "You may not see much happening while you drive across the bridge but the inspection is going on the underside the bridge."

If the weather cooperates, one lane on the westbound bridge will remain closed through Wednesday, March 27 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We know the repair plan will require the driving surface be replaced to eliminate the potholing happening on the driving surface now," said Cantrell. "Once the inspection is complete and data is reviewed, a plan will be developed including any other needed work. We are pushing to let the repair contract in December and have the work start in early 2014. Please bear with us as we continue patching the potholes as they develop until then."
