Section of Big Creek Greenway Set to Close

If you are heading to the Big Creek Greenway on Wednesday, be aware a section will be temporarily closed.

If you're planing on a stroll, a jog or bike ride on the  this week a section will be temporarily closed.

According to Forsyth County, repair work on the Majors Road bridge is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Nov. 2., but is expected to re-open on Thursday, Nov. 3.

"The repair work on the Big Creek Greenway entails replacing a 3’ x 12’ section of concrete, to address an area identified as a potential trip hazard," said Jodi Gardner, the county's director of communications. "The work is being completed by county staff."

In the meantime, the remainder of the trail will be open for use during this temporary closure.

Residents and visitors are asked to avoid the closed section of the trail until the repairs are completed. The greenway can be accessed from several trail heads:

  • 5120 Bethelview Road
  • Fowler Park near the skate park
  • A temporary trail head is located at Exit 12, east of GA 400 on McFarland Parkway.

Parking is available at all locations, but parking is not allowed along Carolene Way, the entrance to Fowler Park.

The county Web site reports, a large portion of Phase 1 of the Big Creek Greenway in Forsyth County was funded by state and federal funds. Phases 2 and 3 were funded by Impact Fees. Funding for Phases 4 and 5 is to come from the $100 Million Parks, Recreation and Green Space Bond approved by voters in February 2008.
