Forsyth Holds Successful "Kids Shop with Cops"

Cumming Patch was at the event and caught up with several kids and the cops that shopped with them.

It was another successful kids shop with cops event Wednesday evening at the Cumming Walmart on Market Place Boulevard.

The annual "FOP Cops and Kids©" event, hosted by the Sgt. D.P. Land Memorial Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 82, helped out 103 children in need living in Forsyth County.

"Within those 103, we had a couple of families from the Abba House, but the majority of those families were people from the community that the [Forsyth County] school social workers pointed out to us," said Det. Matt Starr of the FCSO and State Trustee with the local FOP.

"We're actually helping families that were in need that weren't receiving any other assistance," he said.

Starr also said there were 51 deputies and police officers, the majority of them, from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and City of Cumming Police Department that shopped with the kids.

Each sponsored child, most between the ages of 3 and 14, received $125 to spend on whatever she or he wanted. The children spent their money mainly on toys and clothes.
