Viewfinder: Safety Awareness Day At Coal Mountain

Forsyth County safety officials converge on Coal Mountain Elementary School Thursday for the 2nd Annual Safety Awareness Day.

The safety awareness team at Coal Mountain Elementary School was delighted by the excitement and participation of students who attended the 2nd Annual Safety Awareness Day Thursday. Each student received a passport to attend eight booths focusing on fire, medical emergency,  law enforcement, food preparation and bicycle safety.

"This program follows the student inquiry based learning model that encourages school aged children to lead their instruction by providing an environment for inquiry and Q&A," said Coal Mountain team member, Nancy Worley.

On hand were members of the Forsyth County Fire Department, Northstar Bicycle, Forsyth County EMS, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and Mounted Patrol.

The K-9 Unit were also there and discussed their duties of search and rescue, as well as tracking with the kids. Deputies Brian Chatham, Scott Banning and Scott Goldsberry were accompanied by Bogey and Aaron, two of the unit's canines.

"The kids love this event and have a ball getting together and meeting the different speakers," said Michelle Chapman, another Coal Mountain team member.
