Viewfinder: Sunflower Fields Forever

Ever wonder about the field of sunflowers in South Forsyth County?

Drive through the intersection of Highway 9 and Shiloh Road (near Majors Road) and chances are your eye catches the field of sunflowers. Traffic slows as passersby stop to admire the mega-blooms over three feet high. The golden carpet announces the arrival of summer louder than the shouts of children at your neighborhood swimming pool.

Hundreds of vibrant blooms have become a local attraction. In addition, the field has been used as background for family photos and amateur photographers.

The sunflowers are for sale: $8 for a dozen and $4 for six blooms.  Buckets are filled with pre-cut flowers while the store front provides tools for those who prefer to 'cut-your-own.'

Some have started to drop petals, a sign that the crop has reached its peak, but the vast majority is vivid yellow with diameters measuring nearly eight inches. These cheerful flowers are known to follow the sun each day.

Local resident Barbara Anderson has driven by “a kazillion times” and recently made the stop to pick out a number of blooms. She plans to bring them to a local nursing home where she is certain they will bring smiles to nurses and patients alike.

“They bring a smile to my face every time,” said Anderson.
