Whiz Kid Of The Week: Madison Sales, A Colorful Life

Meet this young writer and illustrator in the making.

Talking to Madison Sales, you'd never guess she's only in the 2nd grade. She's the kind of kid you could have over for lemonade and shoot the breeze, except she's usually too busy reading and writing or whizzing by on her scooter.

Accomplishments:

Madison reads one book a day, but not because she has to. The Vickery Creek Elementary 2nd-grader reads because she simply loves books. It has led her to write and illustrate her own stories as she's found it's her favorite way to release her creative energy.

Instilled with a love for reading from her parents, Madison reads well above her grade level. She also makes time to read to her little sister while keeping up with a busy schedule in Brownies at troop 10816 where she has earned over eight merit badges in just a few months. Madison has also played goalie position on her soccer team, proving she's just as agile on her feet as she is when it comes to reading.

If you were to run into Madison in her neighborhood while she's looking after her dog "Daisy," the two of you would have a nice long conversation that flows as naturally as it does with any adult. You'd walk away wondering how a 2nd grader became so intelligent and personable.

The answer must lie between the pages of a book. Jacqueline Kennedy put it well when she said, "There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world, love of books is the best of all."

Keys To Success

"Madison believes in being confident and respectful along with having fun and making the most of her creativity to work toward any goal she sets for herself," says her mother Dawn, who stresses that reading to your kids at an early age is so important, and that the key to comprehension is allowing kids to read about fun things that interest them.

"Whatever you want to achieve is possible. You may not be great at everything, but trying something new allows you to learn," says Madison who is currently working on her derby car in Brownies for an upcoming race.

Looks like Madison Sales has already mastered one of life's biggest challenges. For her, approaching something new and different is as easy as picking up a good book.
