Publix Deli Subs with Onions Recalled

The FDA announced the voluntary recall of subs made between July 7 and 26.

has voluntarily recalled custom sub sandwiches made in the Publix Deli that contain onions and sold between July 7 and July 26 in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina.

Since most everyone who buys sub sandwiches from the deli plan to eat them immediately, or at least within a day, it would seem that there's nothing left to recall by now. But if you have a half a sandwich still left in the refrigerator, you should check its ingredients.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the sliced onions supplied to Publix by Gills Onions LLC, according to the recall notice provided by the Food & Drug Administration.

The onions may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

"As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted product has been removed from all store shelves," said Maria Brous, Publix media and community relations director.

Don't just toss any suspect sandwiches out. You can get your money back.

"Consumers who have purchased the products in question may return the product to their local store for a full refund," Brous said in the recall notice.

The recall only involved subs with these onions.
