Chepe's Mexican Grill in Cumming Closes Following 51 Health, Safety Inspection Score

An inspector noted roach activity near near the grill and dead roaches near the mop sink, after receiving a complaint about roaches at the eatery.

Chepe's Mexican Grill in Cumming closed five days after it scored a U in a December restaurant inspection.

Forsyth County Planning and Development Director Tom Brown confirmed the 5465 Bethelview Road, Suite 560, restaurant shut its doors Dec. 15 and by email, advised the county of the closing and that it would not be applying for a 2014 alcohol license.

The Forsyth County Environmental Health department conducted Dec. 10 a routine inspection of the eatery, finding it was out of compliance with a number of food health and safety rules.

In addition to hand washing and food temperature and storage problems, the inspector noted standing water throughout the kitchen and walk-in cooler, roach activity near near the grill and dead roaches near the mop sink. The department had received a complaint about roach activity, according to the inspection report, above.

Chepe's in Cumming scored a 51 on its latest inspection. In its previous inspections, it had scored a 95 on April 15 and a 96 in October 2012.

The restaurant earlier in 2013 had closed its south Forsyth location on Mathis Airport Road near Old Atlanta, according to rootsinalpharetta.com. Its Johns Creek location also is apparently closed, as all phone numbers associated with Chepe's are no longer in service and its website is no longer available.

Attempts by Patch to contact a Chepe's representative have been unsuccessful.

I'm calling BS on this one. An entire restaurant chain does not close because of a poor health dept score.

Ate there a few times, but the last time got horribly ill. Now I know why.

I used to work at this location. I worked there for two years. I'm completely shocked. We kept the restaurant spotless when we worked. The kitchen manager we had when I worked there was incredible. He made sure employees kept our side work clean and made sure everything went according to SOP. We rarely had any mishaps with food, and we preserved our food properly and prepared it properly. The original kitchen manager I worked with left awhile after I left the company. I don't remember why. I'm not saying the most recent kitchen manager didn't do his job, but this was so shocking to me because I never even got a glimpse of working conditions such as this. However; this was a restaurant that was pretty known in Cumming and I'm so upset to see it close this way. I hope everyone who reads my feedback knows that Chepes was not always like this. We truly cared for our guests and cared about our restaurant. Our staff was our family, and our guests were the next best thing. So please, do not assume that Chepe's was always like this..As a past bartender, menu photographer, server, and server trainer for Chepe's, it hurts to see this as a past representative. Also, please keep the current employees who have lost their jobs in your thoughts. A lot of employees relied on Chepe's for financial support. Just, remember the restaurant from what it was known for, not what it went out for. Evan LeBlanc

Good riddance to bad rubbish...Chepe's was the absolute worst restaurant I had ever tried...the food was actually inedible and when I complained to management, they first tried giving me a $5 discount on my meal. I said, "Are you kidding me? I can't even eat this stuff. I spit out the one bite I tried because it was so bad." I demanded a full refund and the management didn't even apologize. Someone at a neighboring table leaned over to me and told me that someone else just a few minutes prior to my arrival had a similar complaint about the same dish, so that tells me that rather than dumping the bad food they simply continued serving it all night long. I am happy to see them go. I wrote a scathing review of Chepe's on Facebook and Trip Adviser which Chepe's never even acknowledged. Just watch out, they'll jump in somewhere else under a different name which is why it is important for the County to know who is actually involved in these businesses so they can be on the lookout for repeat offenders. Do yourself a favor, go across the street to Los Maguey. I've never been disappointed with Los Maguey.

I love how Marley totally puts them down. If their food was always horrible, they wouldn't have lasted as long as they did. You maybe had a few bad experiences, but I totally agree with Evan on this one. They went downhill during the last 4 months of their existence. Other than that, they were great. An amazing restaurant but unfortunately went downhill probably due to new management.
