Sawnee EMC Reaches Power Buying Deal With Solar Farm

Customers should not expect any changes to their electricity bills due to the purchase agreement.

Sawnee EMC customers may be getting some of their electricity from a solar farm in southern Georgia, Forsyth County News reports.

The deal will see Sawnee EMC purchase 50 percent of the electricity generated by a 135 acre, 20-megawatt farm in Jeff Davis county. The farm is currently under construction near Hazlehurst.

Vice President of Member Services Blake House told Forsyth County news that the new power-buying arrangement will not have a positive or negative impact on customers' power bills, but will allow people to say that part of their energy comes from a renewable source.

House added that some 60 Sawnee EMC customers are supplying their own solar power, and that Sawnee EMC is required by state law to purchase any excess power generated by these customers.

The solar farm will begin supplying power to Sawnee EMC early in 2015.
