A Horse's Destiny is a Choice

Our little 6-year-old now has the horse of her dreams and Caraway has a little girl to shower with love. Even in the saddest of moments a new beginning can be found and life can discover joy!

If you are looking for a horse, there are plenty of people around looking to get rid of the horses they have. You can find them on Craig's List and other websites, many of them for free. Some horse "owners" find themselves financially unable to keep their horses while others simply grow bored or don't want to take responsibility for the health of an aging horse. Some of these folks care about their animals and others have no emotional attachment to them at all. So hard for us horse lovers to understand, but there it is.

One local family was looking for a horse for their 6-year-old to ride when they came across this big mare. Destiny is a Percheron mare that the family saved from Craigslist. She was very thin, had bad feet, and she wasn't the horse they were looking for, but they couldn't leave her behind. They didn't feel she was safe where she was but they didn't feel they were knowledgeable enough to make her healthy. Instead of walking away, they found a solution. They brought Destiny home and called Save The Horses and asked for help.

Destiny arrived and she is a handful, hard to handle and pushy on the ground, definitely not a horse for a 6-year-old. After a month of good nourishment and farrier care, Destiny is now living on our Chickamauga farm where she can put on some weight, build some muscle, and get some exercise, all of which will make Destiny a healthy, happy, and desirable horse for some lucky adopter.

In the meantime, our local family was still searching for a sweet riding horse for their little girl. As it turns out, we had the perfect solution. Caraway is a charming, 20-year-old Appaloosa mare who is great with kids. After we got her from animal control a few years ago, we adopted her to a family with a 10-year-old boy named Wiley. Wiley had brain cancer, and for two years, he and Caraway were loving companions. Sadly, Wiley lost his battle with cancer, but his family knew that Caraway was destined to bring love and joy to another child. And they were right.
