Not Your Farmer's Daughter

Organic vegetable program from Carlton Farms, delivery every Wednesday between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Chalcedon Presbyterian Church.

I’m a Southern girl, born and bred right here in Georgia. Heck, my grandparents were even chicken farmers and I remember absolutely loathing the sight of my Nanny suiting up for pulling some yucky vegetables out of the ground. Today, I’m almost ashamed to say that I am a certified mom with three kids living in the burbs, I would give anything to see Nanny suit up again.

Call it nostalgia, call it insane, either way, this season I signed up for the organic vegetable program from Carlton Farms. You may or may not have heard about them, but they deliver every Wednesday right here in Cumming! Sign up for their e-mail list and you will be notified to place your order, in which you will show up between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Chalcedon Presbyterian Church - 302 Pilgrim Mill Road. How easy is that?

I am the last person you would expect to be showing up “at the farm” every week to get my box of fresh, organic, good for you vegetables, but I am slowly beginning to be excited about my weekly pick up. Last week I was scared, because I had no clue as to what Farmer Carlton handed me, but you wouldn’t know it by the way I smiled and promptly said my obligatory thank you. I know Nanny was laughing her head off when I promptly went home and googled the contents of my loot.  According to Google, I had two very yummy versions of salad, turnips, loads of strawberries and some equally impressive carrots--no doubt in honor of Easter just had.

So today, the pickup day--I loaded my children up from school and rushed right over for our weekly pilgrimage to town. We eagerly await Farmer Carlton’s arrival and practically squeal with joy when he pulls in. I met a lovely lady in line, to which I totally apologized for not getting her name because my son was answering my cell phone so rudely I lost all concentration. I smiled once again, a little more confident this time and loaded up my bag with greens and more strawberries. I gave myself props for identifying the lettuce greens, and of course the strawberries, however, this is when I lose all the ‘cred’ with my kids.

“What did we get mommy?” beamed my children from the backseat.

“Hmm, well,” I paused, taking a cell phone picture of the scariest of the green contents, “I’m not sure, but we will find out!”

Do you know what I did? I text my friends and asked what the heck it was! Pure evidence, I am not your farmers daughter.

P.S. – it is fennel. Scary.
