After The Storm

Power outages in Cumming after the storm.

Severe storms rolled into Cumming late Monday afternoon bringing with it heavy rainfall, strong gusty winds, and in some areas south of the county, hail.

During the storm, the Forsyth County Emergency Management Agency set off its severe weather sirens twice, which are located throughout the county, notifying residents that severe weather is in the area.

According to Captain Jason Shivers with the county fire department, the only time the sirens are set off is when a tornado warning has been issued.

A tornado warning was issued for the county by the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, but was eventually cancelled.

There were also quite a few power outages throughout the area. About 1,000 customers of Sawnee EMC were affected, but shortly before 7 p.m. that number had decreased to less than 200.

“We’ve done a very good job of getting them back on, said Blake House, Vice President of Marketing and Member Services with Sawnee EMC. “Anytime you have those quick approaching storms, 35-40 mile per hour winds, rain and lightening, you’re going to have a few power outages.”

House said there were some power lines that were hit by debris and falling trees. There was also one broken pole caused by a falling tree near Stoney Point Road in south Forsyth, but crews were on the scene making repairs.

Georgia Power said about 3,100 of its customers in the metro north region, including Forsyth County are without power, but crews are working to restore service.

“We do have all of our crews out there working to restore power as quickly and as safely as possible,” said Konnwello Monroe, spokesperson for Georgia Power.

“Right now we don’t have an estimated time of restoration, but hopefully everyone will be back on later on tonight or early in the morning.”

Sawnee EMC customers can call 770-887-2363 to report an outage and Georgia Power customers can call 1-888-891-0938 to do the same.
