Cumming Gets Slammed With Second Storm

The second severe thunderstorm in less than one week blew through Cumming and Forsyth County causing power outages and downed trees Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a line of showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain and high winds developed early Saturday evening.

"It just came barreling through," said Dan Darbe, Senior Forecaster. "We were getting some really strong downdrafts yesterday in those thunderstorms. As much as probably 70, 80 miles an hour on some of them."

Tornadoes were not part of the storms.

"No, no tornadoes--we didn't have rotation yesterday," said Darbe. "We just didn't have the wind shear for it."

The thunderstorms, much like Wednesday's storms (see story), left thousands without power. According to Georgia Power, during the height of the storm a little more than 2,000 of its customers in Forsyth County were without power. In the Atlanta metro area that number was closer to 50,000.

"The main problems would be trees and/or limbs that have come down into the lines, high winds that may have blown other types of debris into them or lightening," said Carol Boatright, Georgia Power spokesperson.

There were 7500 Sawnee EMC customers without power during the peak of the storm, according to company spokesperson, Cindy Badgett.
