An explosion caused by a malfunctioning turbine late Thursday rocked Georgia Power's Plant Bowen in Bartow County near Cartersville, the second-largest coal-fueled plant in Georgia. Four people suffered minor injuries.

GBI: Union County Murder Suspect Killed Parents

The parents of a Union County double homicide suspect fatally shot by Cherokee Sheriff's Office deputies were killed by their own son, according to preliminary autopsy results released Friday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Cherokee County sheriff's deputies found the bodies of Charles Payne, 59, and Louise Payne, 67, at a Nottley Dam Road home in Blairsville. Payne's 2005 Ford F-150 pick-up truck was missing from the home and the GBI named the couple's son, Anthony Payne, 34, a suspect. Holly Springs-Hickory Flat Patch has more.

- Canton-Sixes Patch

A suspect in a Union County double homicide was shot and killed by Cherokee Sheriff's Office deputies late Thursday night.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued a "be on the look out" for the suspect about 10:20 p.m., according to a Sheriff's Office press release. About 11 p.m., Cherokee deputies spotted the vehicle described in the look out and a traffic stop was conducted on Toonigh Road near Morgan Road in Holly Springs. - Loganville-Grayson Patch

A man with the same address as a Loganville house that was set on fire in January has been charged with arson and other crimes, according to Gwinnett County Jail records.

Gwinnett County police arrested Jonathan Clint Smith on Thursday, charging him with theft by taking, false report of a crime, cruelty to animals, two counts of theft by deception and first-degree arson.
