Forsyth Incumbents Punted at the Polls

The county will have a new solicitor general and state senator in 2015.

The Republican incumbents in two Forsyth County political offices have seen their tenures come to an end after being unseated in Tuesday's runoff elections.

Michael Williams ousted longtime state Sen. Jack Murphy, who was seeking a fifth Senate term after serving two terms in the state House of Representatives. Forsyth County's new Solicitor General will be William Finch, who defeated incumbent Donna Gopaul.

Williams, who netted 66.18 percent of the 16,314 votes cast,Β told Forsyth County News that he chose to run for office due to increased government interference in the private affairs of its citizens. Williams cited the Affordable Care Act as the legislation that pushed him into running.

Once his term begins in January, Williams plans to support the Preservation of Religious Freedom Act and proposals that will increase government transparency.

Finch, who prided himself on his clean campaign, took 60.34 percent of Tuesday's 15,928 votes. He is eager to begin work at the Solictor General's office and to begin working for the citizens of Forsyth County.
