Qualifying Starts Monday for House District 22 Race

The seat was vacated by Cherokee State Rep. Calvin Hill of Hickory Flat, who passed away after a battle with leukemia.

Residents who are itching to get into state politics will soon be able to formally make their intentions known. 

Qualifying will kick off on Monday, Nov. 18, for the special election to fill the House District 22 seat, which was vacated due to the passing of State Rep. Calvin Hill, R-Hickory Flat. 

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp on Tuesday set the qualifying dates for the election, which will be between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m Monday; 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, and 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Nov. 20.

Qualifying will take place at the Secretary of State's agency's Elections Division offices, located at 802 West Tower, 2 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, SE, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. The fee is $400.

House District 22 encompasses eastern Cherokee County, southwestern Forsyth County and parts of Milton in north Fulton County.

While the election will be nonpartisan, the party affiliation of each candidate will be listed on the ballot. If needed, a run-off election has been tentatively set for Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014.

Residents who wish to cast ballots must be registered to vote by Monday, Dec. 9. Registration forms can be obtained at any county elections and voter registration office or from the Secretary of State’s website.
