Forsyth Republican Party Responses to Zereini Campaign Complaint About Solicitor-General

The party, which says it welcomes new members who may have different political views than in the past, added the GOP needs to continue to grow and attract new voters.

About a week after the Susan Zereini for Solicitor-General campaign called on the Forsyth County Republican Party to question incumbent Solicitor-General Donna Gopaul's credentials as a Republican, the party issued a response.

Editor's Note: The following is a press release issued by the Forsyth County Republican Party.

The Forsyth County Republican Party acknowledges receipt of a written complaint by our County Party Chairman Brad Wilkins from the Susan Zereini campaign, which outlines concerns about the current Forsyth County Solicitor-General Dona Gopaul's voting record, past employment in the office of Democrat representative Cynthia McKinney and previous donations to the McKinney campaign. The complaint asks the Forsyth County Republican Party to investigate Gopaul’s background and it concludes with a request that the Forsyth County Republican Party support Zereini in the 2014 primary.

In accordance with Republican Party rules and procedures, our chairman, Brad Wilkins, will submit the complaint to the FCRP County Committee and the issue will be discussed at the next called meeting.

The Forsyth County Republican Party does not endorse or support any candidate in any primary election or special election in which more than one individual qualifies as a Republican candidate.

All candidates for Forsyth County elected offices, who wish to run in the Republican primary must complete the qualifying process. Any candidate, who properly completes the qualification process, pays the qualifying fee and signs an affidavit swearing that they agree with the principles of the Republican Party may run in the Republican primary.

This is the process established and outlined under Georgia’s election law.

The GOP needs to continue to grow and attract new voters. We welcome new members who may have had different political views in the past, but who have honestly reached the decision that they share our belief in limited government, personal responsibility, the rule of law, fiscal responsibility and the other core values of the Republican Party.

The ultimate responsibility for determining if any candidate holds true to Republican principles, rests in the hands of the Forsyth County voters who cast their ballots in the Republican primary.
