Zereini Campaign Calls on Forsyth County GOP To Examine Solicitor's Ties to Cynthia McKinney

Susan Zereini is challenging incumbent Solicitor-General Donna Gopaul for the post.

Editor's Note: The following is a press release issued by the Susan Zereini for Solicitor-General campaign.

The Susan Zereini for Solicitor-General campaign has called on the Forsyth County Republican Party to question incumbent Solicitor-General Donna Gopaul's credentials as a Republican.

"The incumbent has been a Democrat most of her life and is the former legislative aide to Cynthia McKinney, one of the most radical, left-wing Congresswomen ever elected in the United States," Zereini said in a press release. "Now that she's running in a partisan election, suddenly she joins the Republican Party. I've been a Republican my whole life and I have the voting record to prove it."

McKinney's views were so extreme she was shunned by the Democratic Party and ran for President in 2008 as the Green Party candidate with the endorsement of the Worker's World Party, a Marxist-Leninist organization founded in the U.S. in 1959, the release says.

Zereini wants local GOP President Bradley Wilkins to examine Gopaul's ties to McKinney and her voting record to determine if her claim to be a Republican is credible.

"She needs to explain this metamorphisis from supporting such a radical left-wing agenda to becoming a Republican," Zereini added. "If the explanation isn't plausible then I would like the Republican Party to support my campaign as the only true Republican in the race for Solicitor-General."

Gopaul was not elected by Forsyth County voters, but appointed last March by Gov. Nathan Deal when former Solicitor-General Leslie Abernathy-Maddox accepted an appointment as judge in the State Court of Forsyth County.

Many members of the Republican Party attended a recent fundraiser for Gopaul at Tam's Backstage restaurant in Cumming, including some members of the Forsyth County legislative delegation.

"Because she was appointed by the governor, I doubt that local Republicans vetted her," Zereini said. "Once her work history and Democratic ties become public, it will be interesting to see who the real Republicans in Forsyth County are."
