The Friends celebrated the opening of their bookstore, located next to the children’s area at the Cumming Library, last February with a ribbon cutting and reception. When the store first opened it was a single room with shelves on cinderblocks. Since then, the store has expanded and doubled in size. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, thanks to the new shelves purchased from an out-of-business bookstore, as well as the friendly volunteers who staff the store.

“It’s a happy place to be,” said Friends President Lynn Pansen.

The Friends bookstore features organized shelves and genre collections like you would find at the big bookstores, but items are a fraction of the cost.

“The store is organized and neat,” said Pansen, “It looks like a bookstore and we make it easy to find what you’re looking for.” The motto of the volunteers who work in the store is, “friendly and simple.”

The Forsyth County Public Library first approached the Friends about opening a bookstore in late summer of 2011. Since opening the store has raised over $20,000.00. Proceeds from the store help to fund library programs and the Friends are particularly instrumental in funding supplies and performers for the library’s annual Summer Reading Program.

As the Friends bookstore continues to grow and attract new customers, they have plans to continue expanding. The new Post Road Library, expected to open in July, will also house a Friends bookstore. As part of their one year anniversary celebrations, the Friends hosted their first ever members-only sale in the bookstore where Friends and Advocates members could take advantage of special discounts and the sale was a great success. The Friends receive donations of books every day and they rotate inventory so there is always something new on the shelves.

The anniversary sale is open to the public and will take place during library hours now through Feb. 28. To become a member of the Forsyth County Public Library Friends and Advocates or to learn about donating books to the bookstore, please visit http://forsythfol.org/.
