Unique Activities Within 60 Miles of Cumming, GA - Part I

Whether you’ve lived here for most of your life or you’re thinking about moving to the area, there’s something to be said for not getting burned out with your regular weekend routine.  If there are kids in the picture, the words “I’m BORED!” might get said a little too often in your household, so there’s nothing wrong with finding some interesting ways to shake things up.

In my opinion, with some of the top schools in the state and access to the best that Georgia has to offer, Forsyth County—Cumming is used as a starting point—sits within 60 miles of an abundance of fun activities that might not always cross your mind.

1.) LAKEWOOD 400 ANTIQUES MARKET (2 miles):  Honestly, who doesn’t love bargain shopping, especially when you’re surrounded by an abundance of beautiful antiques?  Located in Cumming on Highway 9 between GA 400 exits 13 and 14, this upscale market (which is open on the 3rd weekend of every month) features 500 spaces in a 75,000-foot climate controlled building, with outside veranda and courtyard dealers.

2.) DAHLONEGA (28 miles): As the site of the first U.S. gold rush, this classic Georgia town was first established in 1833.  With an abundance of food and shopping opportunities to be found in the main square, they also offer a spring and summer Farmers Market on Tuesday & Saturday, as well as a Friday Night Concert Series, and their annual Gold Rush festival in October.

3.) WHOLE WORLD IMPROV THEATRE (40 miles):  Located on Spring Street in Midtown Atlanta, this theater offers hysterical improvisation shows (think “Whose Line is it Anyway?”) on Friday and Saturday nights.  If you’re truly looking to laugh and have already experienced a lot of what Atlanta has to offer, you’ll find that the Whole World Theatre is someplace you’ll want to revisit time and time again.

4.) BLUE RIDGE SCENIC RAILWAY (63 miles):  Situated in the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains, the railway offers a great adventure for the whole family that begins at the historic train depot in downtown Blue Ridge.  Rides in these beautifully restored antique rail cars generally last an average of 4 hours (26 miles roundtrip) and include a layover—with plenty of time to eat lunch and peruse the local shops—in the quaint sister towns of McCaysville, GA and Copperhill, Tennessee.

5.) COBBLESTONE GOLF COURSE (43 miles):  Located in Acworth, this golf course has consistently been named one of the top 100 courses in the United States by Golf Magazine, and has been given a four star rating by Golf Digest.  Open to the public, you’ll love the breathtaking layout and champion Bermuda greens!

Stay tuned next week for more unique and exciting adventures!
