Queen Josephine's Diamond Tiara

There is a lot of speculation about who owned Queen Josephine's diamond tiara.

This week we bring you a stunning diamond tiara, Queen Josephine’s diamond tiara. This tiara is made of diamonds set into silver and gold creating laurel and floral motifs.  It is simply gorgeous.

There is a lot of speculation about who owned this tiara first, some believing Queen Désirée (1777-1860), Queen Josephine’s mother-in-law, to be the first owner, but the first person who we know for sure wore it was Queen Josephine (or Josephina) of Sweden and Norway (1807-1876). She is painted wearing the tiara and she is the one whose name is attributed to the piece.

Queen Josephine of Sweden and Norway was wife to King Oscar I and is the granddaughter of the Josephine who married Napoleon I! What a lineage!

There is speculation that Queen Josephine might have worn the tiara on her wedding day, or else that it may have been a wedding present, but no one is quite sure. When Queen Josephine died in 1876, she passed it on to her granddaughter, Princess Louise of Sweden, who married King Frederik VIII of Denmark and became Queen Louise of Denmark.

Prince Gustav of Denmark inherited it from his mother, Queen Louise, in 1926, and the tiara was passed around among them ladies of the Danish Royal Family, until it was inherited by Crown Princess Märtha of Norway in 1944. She was one of Queen Louise of Denmark’s granddaughters and niece of Prince Gustav of Denmark. It has stayed with the Norwegian Royal families ever since.

The tiara was passed to Queen Sonja of Norway through her husband, King Herald V, who inherited it from his mother in 1954. This tiara has only been worn by Queen Sonja of Norway since 1968 when she, as Crown Princess, took over first lady duties. She also wore it for her daughter Märtha Louise’s wedding.

This is a timeless piece with a lot of history behind it! Queen Sonja wears it quite well– and check out that fantastic tiara hair!

Have a great Tuesday!
