Delhi Durbar Tiara (Britain)

Happy Tiara Tuesday!  Today we bring you a gorgeous tiara, the Delhi Durbar Tiara, which is sculpted with brilliant cut diamonds set in platinum and gold!

This tiara was originally made by Gerrard & Co. in 1911 for Queen Mary to wear, as the tiara's name suggests, at the Durbar (a ceremonial gathering) in Delhi, in honor of the succession of King George V as King Emperor.  It originally had emerald toppers, which can be seen in the image below, and was part of an emerald parure Queen Mary had made by Garrard & Co. for the Durbar.

The emerald toppers were later removed in 1922 for use in other jewelry.  The tiara was also altered a bit so that some of the elements would be interchangeable using two of the Lesser Stars of Africa.  Queen Mary permanently lent this tiara to her daughter, Queen Elizabeth, in 1946 and when Queen Elizabeth died it passed to the current Queen Elizabeth II.  Queen Elizabeth II has never worn this tiara in public, but she did lend it to her daughter-in-law, the Duchess of Cornwall.

Hopefully we will get to see more of this tiara!  It's so stunning and needs to see the world!
Thanks for reading and happy Tiara Tuesday!
