Princess Diana's Emerald Choker/Headband

Princess Diana will always be remembered for her beauty and style.  She had great taste along with a hefty budget, so she has pulled off some memorable looks.  Here she is shown at a ball at the Southern Cross Hotel in Melbourne, on October 31st, 1985.  She is wearing a gorgeous turquoise Emanuel designed evening gown.  But the most famous part of this look is the emerald and diamond headband.

Princess Diana is pictured here wearing the emerald and diamond piece as a choker.

This piece was actually a choker that the Queen gifted her as a wedding present.  It was part of a collection that was won by the Duke of Cambridge, son of King George III, in a raffle, yes, a raffle in 1811.  He took the amazing jewels home to his wife, Queen Mary’s Aunt Augusta, and she wore them happily every chance she could, just about daily.

When she died the jewels moved on to Queen Mary in the early 1900′s and became known as Queen Mary’s Cambridge Emerald Collection.  Queen Elizabeth II inherited them in 1953.  The choker Diana is wearing was created by Gerrards out of the Cambridge Emeralds.  Princess Diana famously wore the piece as a headband, the kind of move that made her one of our favorite fashionistas.
