Queen Alexandra’s Amethyst Tiara

Happy Tiara Tuesday everyone!

Today we get to feast our eyes on a gorgeous tiara that belonged to Queen Alexandra, princess of Denmark and queen of Great Britain.   The tiara was created by Cartier sometime in the late 1800′s.  The tiara is decorated with seven beautiful, Siberian amethysts, rich in color, that were a gift from Tsar Alexander III.  The piece also includes almost 90 diamonds weighing a total of over 23 carats.  The frame is silver and gold.

When Alexandra died in 1925, her eldest daughter, Princess Louise inherited the tiara.  There are no photos of her in the piece, however.  And then in 1931 Princess Louise passed the tiara on to her second daughter, Princess Maud, Countess of Southesk.  Maud may have worn the tiara a few times, but eventually decided to sell it in an auction in 1946, where it fetched just £1750.  The mystery of this tiara is that it is unknown who owns it now, and it has not been seen in public.  Let’s hope we get to see it someday atop a beautiful head.
