Pre-Existing Conditions and Gaining Health Insurance Coverage

Obtaining health insurance coverage and pre-existing conditions

In today’s economy, many people losing their jobs are also losing employer-supported group insurance plans. Others currently do not possess health insurance coverage. These situations can offer challenges for those seeking coverage but have pre-existing health conditions that result in coverage declines from the private insurers.

Here are some steps to follow:

* The private insurance market is always an excellent first choice as these major medical programs have the feature of guaranteed renewability. It is always worth the effort to try this avenue first. You can also be pre-screened for eligibility.

However, should a decline appear likely, there are options available.

* If you are on Cobra, check with the State Insurance Department to see if you are eligible for the State Assignment program.

* If you are not on Cobra and have been uninsured for at least six months, check with the federal assigned risk pool. This can offer good coverages for those declined by private insurers.  https://www.pcip.gov/

* In addition, there are private insurers that will cover those with pre-existing conditions within a defined benefit structure. Make sure you carefully check the benefits provided and any elimination periods against the premium payments required. Your health insurance professional can help guide you through these various options.
