The Importance of Showing Appreciation at Work

Recently, the Atlanta Business Chronicle ran an article about the ways in which employees are now altering how they provide rewards and incentives to employees.

I once heard it said that the silver lining of our most recent recession was the fact that it brought human interaction back into the picture—families who could no longer afford to spend time outside the home wound up playing board games and telling stores.  Without parents who could afford the latest-and-greatest video games, children re-connected with their imaginations and the world beyond their front steps.  In short, kinship and gratitude ignited.

With this, it shouldn’t be surprising that employer-employee relations have changed as well.  The article pointed out that during the 90’s, the extravagance of workplace incentive programs was nothing short of outlandish; however, after things took a negative turn in 2008, employers began to see the importance of simply creating a “meaningful or special experience.”

Steve Fallon, the president of Fallon Benefits Group Inc., which is an employee benefits brokerage and consulting firm, pointed out that “Employee disengagement is one of the biggest financial drains on companies.”  He goes on to point out that those same “touchy-feely” ideas about appreciation that once seemed so ridiculous in years past, are now being regarded with positivity.  Gone are the days when business failed to involve emotion—now, employers are starting to realize the importance of gratitude, friendship, and the joy of shared goals.

Plain and simple, when companies choose to reward their employees with small tokens or displays of gratitude, morale increases, as does productivity, revenue generation, and communication.
