PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT HOLIDAY MANNERS FOR KIDS

It’s hard to believe that the holidays are upon us. Where did 2013 go? I love the holidays because they force us to break out of our normal routine and spend more time with our loved ones. Unfortunately, some children don’t handle the routine break so well. Who would blame them? The holidays tend to present ample opportunities for loud noises, silliness and lots of sugar. That is all fine and dandy until someone is rude.

Here are a few things that you can practice with your child before the holidays get here to help them be prepared.

    • Greet others with a smile and a hello. My daughter stayed home from school yesterday because she was sick. When my oldest son arrived home, he greeted her and gave her a big hug. It made her feel so special. We often take this for granted with the people that we live with. A smile  and a kind word mean so much.
    • Use the magic words “Please,” “Thank You,” “You’re Welcome,” “Excuse Me” and “I’m Sorry.”Sometimes we get too comfortable with our immediate families and we leave our manners at the door. Manners are important no matter where we are, including our own homes.
    • Obey the first time. This is something that children should do anyway but we know that doesn’t always happen. Making a game out minding the first time at home will make it even easier for kids when they are guests in someone else’s home.
    • Have good table manners. By planning a sit down dinner with your family every night (or as many nights as your schedule permits), you give your children the opportunity to practice what is expected of them when they are seated at any dinner table.

Having good manners is really just about being courteous to others and putting other people first. If your children can remember to treat others how they want to be treated, the holidays will be an enjoyable time for everyone.
